How to Choose the Best Single Stage Snow Blower

Clearing Width and Intake Depth

Wider clearing widths reduce the number of passes you need. The EGO Power+ 21-inch models sweep a generous path, while the NOVUS 18-inch unit suits narrow walkways. Intake depth matters too, especially when a storm dumps more than a foot of snow.

Power Source and Run Time

Battery models like the EGO Power+ SNT2125AP run quietly with zero cord hassles, but you’ll want enough reserve for long stretches. The Skil PWR CORE 40 offers a solid balance, while the Steelite corded electric eliminates range anxiety if you have an outlet nearby. For heavy, wet snow, a gas unit like the NOVUS delivers raw torque.

Auger Design and Throw Distance

Steel augers chew through crusted snow, while rubber augers resist damage on rough surfaces. The Skil PWR CORE 40 can launch snow up to 30 feet, making it easier to clear driveways without burying walkways. Adjusted chute rotation also helps you control where the snow lands.

Protection and Maintenance

Even the best single stage snow blower needs care. A weatherproof cover shields it from moisture, rust, and UV damage. The CRAFTSMAN Single-Stage Snow Blower Cover is a tailored option, while the Zettum and Kipiea covers offer universal fits for most machines.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much snow can a single stage snow blower handle?

Most single stage units handle up to 8 to 12 inches of light, fluffy snow. For heavier, wet snow or deeper drifts, you may need a two-stage machine. In 2026, many electric models like the EGO and Skil have improved their throw distance, but they still work best on paved surfaces.

Is it worth buying a cover for a Craftsman single stage snow blower?

Yes. A cover keeps dust, moisture, and pests away from the engine and auger housing. The CRAFTSMAN cover is a perfect fit, but universal covers from Zettum and Kipiea also work well. It also protects your investment during the summer months.

Are battery-powered single stage snow blowers as effective as gas models?

Battery models have come a long way in 2026, offering instant start and low maintenance. The EGO 21-inch models deliver impressive power, but gas units like the NOVUS may still have an edge in heavy, wet snow. Your choice depends on your lot size and tolerance for cordless range.

Can I use a single stage snow blower on gravel driveways?

Yes, but you should choose a model with a rubber auger or adjust the skid shoes to avoid flinging pebbles. Some machines come with rubber-tipped augers for exactly this purpose. If you’re still comparing, our best EGO single stage snow blower guide covers models that handle rougher terrain.
